Hardware Load Balancers

### The Era of Physical Appliances

Before the cloud computing boom, load balancing was largely handled by dedicated physical hardware appliances (e.g., F5 Networks, Citrix NetScaler) installed in on-premise data centers.

### Characteristics

- **High Performance:** Custom ASICs designed specifically for high-throughput network packet processing. - **Expensive:** High upfront capital expenditure and ongoing maintenance costs. - **Inflexible:** Difficult to scale rapidly compared to spinning up software load balancers in the cloud.

While still used in massive enterprise data centers for edge routing, the industry has heavily shifted toward software-defined solutions.
